Proposal 1: Create Mount Hood National ParkIssue: Since the 1940s, the Forest Service management of Mount Hood National Forest has been disastrous, with timber interests, highway and powerline engineers and ski resorts increasingly dominating the agency culture. Fixing the Forest Service is not an option - the agency’s mission is fundamentally flawed when it comes to providing recreation and protecting ecosystems. Proposal: Remove much of the northern portion of Mount Hood National Forest from U.S. Forest Service administration, and transfer to the Department of Interior as Mount Hood National Park. Though the exact boundaries would be determined as part of a national park feasibility study, the conceptual boundaries would include the Oregon side of the Columbia Gorge, Mount Hood, and the backcountry around the mountain, extending south to the Clackamas River. |
