Sounds like a snow jobApril 6, 2004 To the Editor: Dave Riley has good reasons to be concerned about global warming. It is already affecting the ski area, Mt. Hood Meadows, with unpredictable snow conditions ("Ski area does its part on global warming," March 15). But while Riley boasts about buying wind power, he and his company are also planning to raze forests in order to build new chairlifts and vacation homes on the pristine northeast side of Mount Hood. In addition to damaging alpine habitats and watersheds, a new ski resort would also exacerbate carbon dioxide pollution with increasing energy consumption and automobile traffic. Given Mt. Hood Meadows' past environmental record and future intentions, its enthusiasm for wind power seems to be little more than cosmetic propaganda. CHRISTIAN McNEIL Southeast Portland |
